Just Getting There

A luxurious interlude. Nov 17 -18, 2015.

overcast 3 °C

Getting to Cambodia is not all that direct.

Nov 17th, 2015 and I am Air Canada’s guest in a 5 star luxury hotel in Beijing, China, after an aircraft problem caused me a missed flight. Now I am exploring Langham Place Hotel's exquisite art work and looking down at the city which is experiencing smog levels over 500, or “beyond index.” Next week, a “Red Alert Day” would cause school closures and reduced traffic.

The Lobby delivers some of of Beijing's world-famous contemporary art scene with "Unmask", a four-metre-high sculpture of a splashing teacup "Beijing Welcomes You".

Prominent French artist Christian De Laubadere's specially commissioned piece for the hotel features the coiled coifs of Oriental beauties with hand-embroidered collars.

A small art paradise, the hotel displays more than 400 artworks showcased throughout the hotel,

Angels are a signature feature of Langham Place hotels worldwide. Ones, such as these whimsical pieces are displayed on each floor as one steps out of the elevator. Mao is kindly thought of as "father" to many Chinese people - But surely not an angel?

Today's conditions in this city of 21 million people make it difficult to explore. Beijing ordered hundreds of factories to shut and allowed children to skip school as choking smog reached over 25 times safe levels, casting a cloud over China's participation in Paris climate talks this week.
